Iraqi folklore meets modern expressionism

Alrubaei works mainly with acrylic paint to bring life to the Mesopotamia of her childhood. Women clad in robes, draped with Arabic calligraphy. Traditional tea kettles embellished in bold colours. Swirling mosque domes covered with doves. With each painting, a short story is told through brush strokes. An aching nostalgia is felt for something lost but not forgotten. A sentiment we can all relate to.

About

Born in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, Maisoon Alrubaei has always had a deep appreciation for art. This passion was kindled by a need to express oneself and nurtured in a family where she was the youngest. She eventually went on to study architecture, defying societal expectations to pursue medicine.

Circumstances forced her to leave Iraq. She then dedicated a decade towards retraining herself, as an advanced skills teacher in mathematics. She then retired and decided to pick up her paint brushes again. The circle of life was completed. She now does what she had wanted to do, all along.
